Call to oppose Senate Bill 164!!!!
January 25, 2016
This bill was heard on February 2nd and should be voted on in the near future.
A bill has been submitted that we, as ABATE members, need to act on to have stopped! Senate Bill 164 has been introduced which will dictate what children, based on age alone, will be legally permitted to be a passenger on a motorcycle.
This bill will affect your ability to decide for yourself whether your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or whoever may safely ride with you on your bike. Below is the text which is applicable to us:
A PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF 10
YEARS MAY NOT RIDE ON A MOTORCYCLE
SUBJECT TO PARAGRAPH (1)
OF THIS SUBSECTION,
A PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF 12
YEARS MAY NOT RIDE ON A MOTORCYCLE UNLESS
THE PERSON’S FEET ARE ABLE TO REACH AND REST ON
THE FOOTRESTS REQUIRED UNDER
§21–1305OF THIS SUBTITLE
It is our understanding that the passenger's feet must reach the footrests to legally be a passenger. Is this addition to the law necessary? We don't think so. Adding an age factor to this law does not take into account the physical characteristics of the individual child or the characteristics of the bike.
Please take the time to call your Senator and POLITELY voice your opposition to this bill. Especially make this call if your Senator is on the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.
